Once we understand the etiology of a problem, we can better understand how to correct the problem. Two methods to help with diagnoses include cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). These methods will be reviewed in depth, along with landmarks and guidelines to help in their use. Orthotic and nighttime appliance therapies will be discussed, along with indications for multiple types of appliances - what to use when and why. Once the joint is stabilized, then what? Phase two stabilization techniques will be explored, including orthodontic, prosthetic and combination therapies. Chair-side bite stabilization with bonded resin will also be reviewed.
